Do the Math

About Me

My Name is Dave Powers. I teach middle school mathematics in St. Louis, Missouri.

I started “Do the Math” for one reason: I wanted a place to call home at which I could participate in the connective reading and writing process that I have been reading about for the last year. In my first two years of teaching, I have sat on the sideline and watched as educators from around the world connected. This next year, I want to participate.

My Vision:

Q: What would I really like to see be produced by the “Classroom 2.0″ movement?

I would like for the teachers of the world to organize to create a better way for students to learn and interact with Mathematics and each other. I think that if there are over six billion people on the planet, it should not be that difficult to create an AMAZING learning environment for students.

I foresee that this “place” would house free digital lessons, resources, and learning communities for mathematics students. This environment could be built in much the same way that wikipedia was created: Motivated and interested people (students and teachers) giving away their knowledge and intellectual property rights to the world’s benefit. This is hopefully just the start.

The Essential Questions I am Attempting to Find Answers to:

Q1: How technology enhance the quality of quantitative thought in middle school students?

Q2: How can we empower students to be the “creators of” as well as the “consumers of” quantitative thought?

Thank you for interest.

We will try to make the information found on this blog worthwhile and relevant so you continue to take part in this learning environment.
